MARIETTA, Georgia - September 2005 -- Sidelines, a popular sports bar and grill in the northwestern Atlanta suburb of Marietta, has now converted its former 350-capacity special events room into a full-on heavy metal concert venue known as The Darkside. The room's 'metalmorphosis' comes as the result of a deal between Sidelines owner Joe Ahn and Infernal Machine singer/guitarist Shain Stewart who books the acts and owns both the Darkside name and sound and lighting gear.

To properly equip the new performance space, Stewart turned to Atlanta's Guitar Center, which evaluated the venue's needs and recommended, among other things, a new 40-channel Soundcraft GB8 mixing console. He then brought in Fred Jacobson and Todd Magee of local systems integrator FSJ & Associates (www.fsjusa.com) to make some final equipment specifications and perform the sound reinforcement system installation.

"Having been a long-time Soundcraft fan, I was excited to learn that Shain was having us install a new GB8," says Magee, who now also serves as The Darkside's primary house sound engineer on weekends. "I basically grew up mixing on Soundcrafts, so even though we were installing this desk unheard, I knew that it would sound great - and it does. The new mic pres and EQs on the board are absolutely top-notch. There's lots of headroom and a nice crisp definition on the high end, and yet the GB8 still very much retains that classic British sound.

"As far as features go, man, what a console! The GB8 has individual-channel phantom power, phase reverse, 100Hz low-cut filters, four-band EQs that are incredibly responsive, eight aux sends, four stereo channels, four stereo returns and an 11x4 matrix, which is awesome considering how affordable this console is. There's no doubt that a lot of thought went into how the GB8 was laid out and what it was equipped with. This is a quality desk."

For now, Magee is using the console to mix both the house PA system and monitor wedges, which, he notes, has been working out very well. "I've already had so many musicians tell me that this is the best club to play in the Atlanta area and that they had the best monitor sound ever on this stage. And, of course, I guess I have to share at least some of that credit with the GB8," he laughs.

In Autumn 2001, the old Wankdorf stadium in the Swiss capital of Berne was demolished to make way for a new multi-purpose stadium.

The stadium where Germany won the FIFA World Cup for the first time against Hungary in 1954 (known as The Miracle of Berne), witnessed its last football match on August 3rd before the demolition team moved in.

The general contracting company, Marazzi AG, were awarded the contract for the planning and the realisation of the stadium, with a construction budget of 350m Swiss Francs.

The building's multi-purpose concept is designed for maximum corporate and business usage - marking the start of a new era of sporting experience. Over 32,000 comfortable seats make the Stade de Suisse one of the largest sporting stadiums ever built in Switzerland. The Stade de Suisse has been selected to host various matches during the 2008 European Soccer Championships and conforms to the UEFA and FIFA standards in every respect.

Spectator comfort is at the forefront under the covered stands. There is an extensive range of catering services at over 20 locations in the ground; VIP and business lounges, 20 boxes, clear stewarding and sign-posting arrangements for visitors and a state-of the-art entry system are all provided by the new Stade de Suisse.

To ensure excellent communication throughout the vast complex a 79,000W public address system has been installed.

Put out to tender by Marazzi AG, the contract for the PA installation was awarded to Fischerplan Electronic GmbH of Rodersdorf, working to an overall system design by Dr.W.A. Günther Audio Systems, who provided full project support right through to final commissioning.

Dr. W.A. Günther designed a complete Harman Pro solution for the main system, covering the playing area and stands, complemented by a 100V line evacuation system from Bosch Präsideo operating in the inner concourse of the stadium complex.

The core elements of the arena's PA system are JBL Professional loudspeakers, Crown digital amplifiers, BSS Audio digital audio matrix, Soundcraft K1 desk, as well as wireless microphone technology and conference systems. The complete processing and distribution of the signal, from the loudspeaker to the final stage, is fully digital and redundant.

The Soundcraft mixing desk was configured with 20 x mono and 10 x stereo inputs. Said Dr. W.A. Günther's Felix Alpstäg, "We recommended the K Series because of its modularity and flexibility, and provision of sufficient stereo inputs. This provides us with enough groups for routing to all zones within the stadium, while at the same time meeting the requirement for redundancy."

The rugged K1 offers a choice of 8, 16, 24 or 32 mono or stereo inputs, with four sub groups and six auxiliaries. Four band EQ throughout, integral stereo returns and matrix complete this powerful mixing package.

In combination with Bosch Präsideo, this system concept fulfils the standard for electrical-acoustic emergency warning systems, EN 60849.

The acoustic measurements carried out during commissioning of the system demonstrate a high level of speech intelligibility and plenty of headroom; it also illustrated a well-balanced acoustic pattern, extremely good sound-level distribution and impressive acoustic reproduction in the bass range.

As a result, in addition to hosting soccer matches, the infrastructure will offer the stadium's future event management an ideal platform for the organisation of modern events, such as festivals, concerts, bike or motor-cross races, congresses and conferences.
